Elemental Wins Silver Davey Award for VOX

Toronto communications firm Elemental Inc. was recently awarded a silver in the prestigious International Davey Awards, which honour the achievements of creative “Davids” – smaller players who derive their strength from big ideas rather than stratospheric budgets. Elemental was recognized in the corporate communications category for their cutting-edge work on the Liberty Market VOX, a newsletter for tenants of Toronto’s Liberty Market Building.

The Liberty Market Building is a restored warehouse that houses some of Toronto’s hippest, most interesting companies, including designers, artists, photographers and media companies. The building offers a unique mix of office, studio and retail space, and has become a landmark in Toronto’s trendy, uber-creative Liberty Village.

“The newsletter had to be visually arresting, with compelling content that people would actually read,” says Brent Wardrop, Elemental founder and president. “It goes to a bunch of creative professionals, so we designed it to be something that would capture their interest – and reflect the creative, innovative nature of the building itself. We took the one of the most vital visual elements of the LMB – the slightly gritty, modern, industrial feel – and merged it with the sense of reinvention and innovation that is happening as the building takes shape.”

The impactful design of the newsletter is based on the thematic use of black, white and red, with a lot of colour added via dramatic photos and illustrations; the dramatic 11x11 layout is on premium paper stock with a subtle texture. The newsletter appeals immensely to the building’s communication-savvy tenants and has also been used as an effective marketing tool for prospective tenants.

Elemental was awarded an additional silver Davey in the corporate branding category for their design of a fresh new logo for Overtimeshare (www.overtimeshare.com), a company that helps timeshare owners sell or donate their unused timeshares.
